Get ready to experience the Colosseum like never before! The iconic Roman amphitheatre is getting a major makeover, and this time it’s not about fixing cracks or cleaning statues. The Italian government is planning to install a retractable floor in the heart of the Colosseum, bringing the ancient arena back to life.

A Stage for the Past and Present

This ambitious project, a collaboration between the Colosseum Archaeological Park and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, aims to recreate the arena’s original floor which has long crumbled away. Imagine watching performances in the same space where gladiators once battled! The retractable floor will allow the Colosseum to host events and performances once again, blending ancient history with modern entertainment.

“The reconstruction of the Colosseum arena is a great idea which travelled around the world,” said Minister for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism Dario Franceschini. “It will be a great technological intervention which will give visitors the chance not only to see the basements but to admire the beauty of the Colosseum from the centre of the arena.”

Unveiling the Colosseum’s Secrets

But that’s not all! The retractable floor will also protect the hypogeum, a fascinating network of tunnels and chambers beneath the arena where gladiators and animals were once prepared for their grand entrances. The hypogeum, now exposed, will be preserved and showcased to visitors thanks to the retractable floor.

“The goal is to make the surface of the Colosseum arena floor usable again and to identify a compatible and reversible technological solution for covering the underground spaces,” explained a statement from the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism. “The interventions must be designed in such a way as to simultaneously offer the perception of the level of the arena on which the games took place and the vision of the complex system of underlying structures and mechanisms.”

A Modern Marvel in an Ancient Setting

The retractable floor will be a marvel of engineering. Set to be completed by 2023, it will include a system of lifts to connect the hypogeum with the arena floor. Design teams from around the world have until February 1 to submit their bids to create this innovative structure. The project, with an estimated cost of 18.5 million euros, will allow visitors to experience the Colosseum in a completely new way.

“The new arena will have to be conceived as a unitary floor, with a high technological content, consisting of mechanized opening and closing devices, allowing visitors to understand the synergy and the close relationship with the underground, also using systems that refer to the mechanisms of the lifts and of ancient mobile scenes,” continued the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.

A Symbol of Resilience

The Colosseum, completed in 80 AD, has witnessed empires rise and fall. It stood as a testament to Roman power and grandeur, hosting gladiatorial contests and other spectacles that captivated the ancient world. Though its original floor crumbled centuries ago, its majestic walls have endured. The new retractable floor project is not just about restoring the arena but also about celebrating the enduring spirit of the Colosseum. It represents a commitment to preserving and sharing this iconic landmark with future generations.

Get ready to step back in time as the Colosseum prepares to welcome audiences once again. The retractable floor will be more than just a technological feat; it will be a bridge between the past and present, allowing visitors to connect with the history and grandeur of Ancient Rome in a way never before imagined.
