Ever wondered how the Italian military contributes to keeping their streets safe? You’re not alone! While the Italian military is known for its prowess on the battlefield, it also plays a vital role in maintaining public order and protecting citizens.

Guardians of Public Order: A Multifaceted Approach

Operation STRADE SICURE, or Operation Safe Streets, is a testament to this. It’s a collaborative effort involving the Italian Army, Carabinieri (military police), and Navy to bolster public safety and deter crime. This operation was initially established to augment the capabilities of local law enforcement, particularly in the provinces and metropolitan cities. It aims to combat petty crime, supervise sensitive locations, and maintain public order.

From bustling tourist attractions and historical landmarks to vital transportation hubs like metro stations, these forces are deployed across the country. You’ll see them patrolling, maintaining a visible presence, and safeguarding critical infrastructure. While the operation’s original focus was on general security, it also plays a role in deterring terrorism.

Meeting the Troops: A First-Hand Account

My recent trip to Rome gave me a chance to witness this operation firsthand. I observed the deployment of troops, captured images of their vehicles, and had the opportunity to chat with some of them. It was fascinating to hear about their experiences and the importance they place on their role in maintaining public safety.

The majority of troops I encountered were from the Bersaglieri regiments, renowned for their sharp-shooting skills and traditional maroon fezzes. But soldiers from other branches of the Army were also present, as well as Air Force personnel in combat uniform guarding Ciampino airport. The Carabinieri also patrolled various locations.

These troops, equipped with personal weapons and body armor, work in small teams, forming pairs or trios to provide mutual support. They act as Public Security Agents, granted additional legal powers to perform their duties.

A Glimpse into the Deployment

Their deployment is strategic, with vehicles close at hand for quick response. They set up semi-permanent checkpoints, utilizing lightweight gazebos for shade without compromising their visibility. The Army utilizes vehicles like the LINCE and Iveco VM90T, while the Carabinieri employ the Land Rover Defender alongside the Discovery. The Air Force also uses Land Rover Defenders for their operations at the airport.

A Sense of Duty: A Personal Perspective

Despite the demanding nature of their work, the troops I spoke with exhibited a strong sense of purpose and dedication. They expressed satisfaction with their role in maintaining public order, even acknowledging that this mission may not be the most thrilling. However, they emphasized the importance of serving their country and the satisfaction derived from contributing to public safety.

The Paradox of Security: A bittersweet Encounter

While the visible presence of the Police and Military throughout the city undoubtedly contributed to a sense of safety, it also presented a paradox. The high-security measures effectively deterring petty crime and other disturbances left me feeling secure. However, it was during one of my last days in Rome, returning from an attraction to my hotel, that I became a victim of distraction theft on a public bus. My camera and its memory card, containing some of the most compelling photographs I had captured during my exploration of Operation STRADE SICURE, were stolen.

This experience serves as a stark reminder that even with the best security measures in place, vigilance is crucial.

In conclusion, Operation STRADE SICURE is a testament to the Italian military’s commitment to public safety and a collaborative effort to ensure a secure environment for both citizens and tourists. While the operation has proven to be a success in deterring crime and maintaining order, it highlights the importance of individual awareness and vigilance. It’s a constant reminder that even in the most secure environments, caution remains essential.
