The Colosseum, a majestic amphitheater dating back 2,000 years, is a symbol of Rome’s glorious past. This iconic landmark draws millions of visitors every year, making it one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations. I, too, was eager to experience this piece of history firsthand, so I embarked on my own journey to the Colosseum in October 2022.

The Lure of “Skip-the-Line” Tickets:

Anticipating the huge crowds that typically gather at the Colosseum, I opted for a “skip-the-line” ticket to avoid the long queues. While I managed to snag a ticket for a reasonable price, my excitement soon faded as I realized that the promise of a hassle-free experience was a bit of a misleading illusion.

Crowds, Crowds, Everywhere:

As I approached the Colosseum, the streets were already teeming with tourists. Navigating through the dense throngs was a struggle as people constantly stopped to capture the iconic structure with their cameras, blocking paths and sidewalks. The unruly crowds made my journey to the entrance a frustrating experience.

Finding My Tour Guide: A “Where’s Waldo” Moment:

Upon reaching the Colosseum, I had to locate a black flag near the Arch of Constantine, another historic landmark. The bustling piazza resembled a chaotic game of hide-and-seek. The overflowing crowds made it extremely difficult to find my tour guide, and I found myself frantically searching as the clock ticked closer to my entry time.

A Bathroom Breakdown:

Once inside, I found myself facing another unfortunate reality—the overcrowded bathrooms. Pushy tourists, vying for a stall, created a stressful and unpleasant atmosphere. The sight of a woman cutting in line with her entire tour group was outrageous, and the chaos made me question the civility of some visitors.

A Glimpse of the Arena:

After a grueling half-hour ordeal waiting to use the bathroom, I finally got a glimpse of the arena’s breathtaking grandeur. However, the sea of people made it impossible to fully appreciate the magnificence of the Colosseum. I was forced to stand on tiptoes just to get a brief view of the arena, surrounded by a wall of heads.

Exhibits: A Quick Glance and Go:

The Colosseum’s exhibits were just as packed as the arena viewpoints. The overwhelming crowds made it impossible to properly engage with the exhibits, and I quickly gave up trying to see them after just 15 minutes.

Crowded Views:

While the Colosseum’s interior offered panoramic views of surrounding historical sites, these areas were equally crowded, making it difficult to truly enjoy the sights. I realized that the allure of the Colosseum was overshadowed by the overwhelming presence of other tourists.

A Quiet Moment Lost: A Future Wish:

My visit to the Colosseum was a mixed bag of emotions: awe, frustration, and disappointment. I longed for the tranquility of a quiet stroll through the ancient arena. However, I had to concede that my experience was far from the peaceful journey I had envisioned.

A Winter Visit: A Dream for the Future:

Looking back, I realize that timing played a crucial role in my Colosseum experience. I plan to revisit Rome during the winter when the crowds are smaller, hoping for a more serene and enjoyable experience. The colossal history of the Colosseum deserves a more peaceful and intimate encounter. Perhaps then, I can finally experience the magic of this monumental structure without the chaos of the crowds.
