A Divine Sin and a Peaceful Stay: Exploring Rome's Contrasts

A Journey into Taste: DivinPeccato

Feeling adventurous and drawn to a playful name, I decided to try DivinPeccato – a restaurant promising “divine sin” – using my Smartbox gift card. The restaurant, near Trastevere, sits in Piazza della Rovere, just a stone’s throw from St. Peter’s and Castel Sant’Angelo, making it a prime location for exploring Rome’s historical gems.

For this special occasion, I invited Fr. Norman Tanner, SJ, a renowned scholar and former dean of the Pontifical Gregorian University, to join me. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by the young and talented Roman chef, Stefano Carucci. He’s a master of transforming simple ingredients into culinary masterpieces, creating a symphony of flavors that tantalize the senses.

The restaurant’s unique ambiance adds to the dining experience. The lower level, resembling a dimly lit wine bar, is said to represent Hell, while the upper floor, with its bright and airy atmosphere, frescoed walls, and white tablecloths, symbolizes Paradise. We opted for Paradise, enjoying a breathtaking view of Castel Sant’Angelo from our window.

A Feast for the Senses

The Smartbox menu promised a delectable journey through the best of seasonal Italian cheeses, accompanied by sweet pear, organic jams, walnuts, and chestnut honey. This delightful appetizer set the stage for a feast of Garfagnana specialties served on a charming chopping board.

We savored marinated beef carpaccio, sliced salami, Bazzone ham, and pork neck biroldo, along with a small omelet and a refreshing salad. While the Smartbox experience concluded with this delightful spread, we couldn’t resist adding a sweet note to our meal.

Fr. Norman indulged in a divine hot chocolate flan with a soft center, served over a cool vanilla cream, while I opted for a refreshing lemon ice cream. Each bite was a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to quality and flavor. The fine white wine and sparkling mineral water included in the Smartbox voucher only added to the enjoyment, and the desserts, at a modest 6 euros each, were worth every penny.

A Serene Retreat: Domus Vitellia

In the same area of Rome, we discovered a peaceful oasis: Domus Vitellia, a guesthouse nestled within the serene Monastery of Santa Chiara.

This sanctuary offers a respite from the bustling city, located near the beautiful Villa Pamphili, one of Rome’s most magnificent parks. From this strategic location, you can easily access St. Peter’s, Trastevere, and the Gianicolo center with its charming squares.

Domus Vitellia offers a tranquil retreat for those seeking spiritual renewal. It’s a sanctuary away from the noise and traffic, allowing guests to truly relax and reconnect with their inner selves. Public transportation makes it easy to explore the city, with the Vatican reachable within 15 minutes and the historic center (Largo Argentina) a mere 25-minute tram ride away.

A Comfortable Stay and a Warm Welcome

Domus Vitellia provides 23 rooms, ranging from single to quadruple, catering to individuals, couples, families, and groups. Each room, though simply decorated, is equipped with modern amenities, including a private bathroom and air conditioning, ensuring a comfortable and peaceful stay.

The guesthouse offers various amenities for its guests, including a TV room, refreshing drinks in the lobby, and private parking, even for buses. A continental breakfast is provided, and for larger groups, catering services, including half-board or full board, can be arranged upon request. Reservations can be made via email, and payments are accepted by credit card or debit card. The guesthouse is open 24 hours, allowing guests to come and go as they please.

Whether you’re seeking culinary adventures or a peaceful escape, Rome has something to offer everyone. DivinPeccato provides a unique dining experience, while Domus Vitellia offers a serene retreat, making your Roman journey both delightful and enriching.
