Get ready to be transported back in time! We’ve been hard at work, and we’re excited to share our latest progress.
2022 has been a year of amazing growth for our 3D reconstruction of ancient Rome. The area we’ve brought to life has tripled in size, covering over 40% of the city within Aurelian’s walls. We’re talking about the bustling city during late antiquity—a time when Rome was at its peak!
A New Level of Detail
We haven’t just expanded our coverage; we’ve also made improvements to the models themselves. Many of our existing 3D models have been replaced with more accurate, high-quality versions. Take, for example, the Temple of Divine Trajan, the Theater of Marcellus, and a significant portion of the Forum Romanum—they’ve all been given a fresh look. And there’s even more exciting stuff coming your way soon!
A Bird’s-Eye View
Ready for an aerial adventure? Our new video takes you on a breathtaking tour of ancient Rome, showcasing our 3D reconstruction from a unique perspective.
Here’s a sneak peek at the routes you’ll be exploring:
-
From East to West: Start with a panoramic view of the city from the east. Descend over the Colosseum, journey along the Via Sacra, marvel at the golden roof of the Temple of Venus and Roma, and finally pause in front of the Capitolium and the Temple of Jupiter.
-
A Reverse Journey: This time, we’ll be flying from the north end of the Capitolium (Arx), crossing the Via Sacra, passing by the Colosseum, and then veering south. The Arch of Constantine and the Colossus statue will be visible on your left.
-
The City’s Southern Side: Starting at the Baths of Caracalla, you’ll soar over the ancient and modern Via Appia, glide through the Circus Maximus, and fly between the Palatine and the Capitolium. Our journey takes you past the Velabrum area, the Forum Romanum, the Forums of Caesar and Augustus, and finally the Baths of Constantine.
-
Along the Tiber: This journey begins with a stunning view of Rome from the south, featuring the Capitolium in the foreground and the Tiber River below. We’ll follow the river, pass by Tiberina Island, circle the Theater of Marcellus, and admire the Capitoline Hill and the Temple of Divine Trajan. Next, we’ll zoom between the Basilica Ulpia and the Trajan Markets, leaving the Forums of Augustus and Nerva behind. After a spin over the Forum of Peace, we’ll catch a glimpse of the Capitolium temples in the distance.
-
Across the Entire City: This time, we’re covering the entire 3D reconstruction from west to east. Start at the complex of mills on the Janiculum, and journey through Trastevere (Transtiberim), the Tiber River, Velabrum, Forum Romanum, Nerva and Peace, and Suburra. Our flight culminates at the Baths of Trajan, with the Colosseum visible in the south.
-
Eastern Exploration: This route begins in the eastern part of the city, flying near the Colosseum, and then passing by the Baths of Titus and Trajan. We’ll then journey over the Temple of Tellus, leave the Basilica of Maxentius behind, and fly over the imperial Forums. Catch a breathtaking panorama of the Campus Martius and Via Lata (Via del Corso) as we pass the Temple of Isis, the Septa Julia, and finally pause over the Baths of Agrippa. The Pantheon’s gilded dome will be visible behind.
-
A Grand Finale: We’ll conclude our journey with a 360-degree circle around the entire 3D reconstruction. Our flight starts at Porta Flaminia (Piazza del Popolo today) in the north and ends at the same point, showcasing a panoramic view of ancient Rome from above.
