A Glimpse into Rome’s Past:
The Colosseum was constructed between 72 and 80 AD, a testament to the Roman Empire’s architectural prowess. It was the stage for gladiator battles, chariot races, and public executions, captivating crowds with its grandeur and spectacle. However, the fall of the Western Roman Empire brought with it years of neglect, with earthquakes further damaging the structure. By the 20th century, two-thirds of the Colosseum had crumbled. Thankfully, restoration efforts began in the 1990s, ensuring the preservation of this iconic landmark.
A Crowd-Filled Adventure: My Colosseum Experience
My first visit to the Colosseum in October 2022 was a whirlwind of excitement and frustration. Despite booking a skip-the-line ticket, navigating the throngs of tourists proved to be a challenge.
A Sea of Tourists:
As I approached the Colosseum, I was immediately met with a sea of humanity. The streets leading to the attraction were teeming with tourists, creating a maze of bodies and outstretched cameras. It was like navigating a human obstacle course.
The Challenge of Finding My Tour Guide:
My tour guide was supposed to be waiting near the Arch of Constantine, but finding them in the densely packed piazza felt like a needle-in-a-haystack experience. I spent nearly an hour searching, feeling a growing sense of anxiety as my entry time drew closer.
The Battle for the Bathroom
Once inside the Colosseum, I encountered a new kind of battle—the fight for the bathroom. The line was a chaotic mix of people jostling and shoving, with complete disregard for any semblance of order. I was shocked and dismayed by the aggressive behavior, a stark contrast to the historical grandeur surrounding us.
The View from the Crowd:
After finally conquering the bathroom battle, I eagerly awaited my first glimpse of the arena. However, the crowd was so thick that it felt like a sea of heads. While I could catch glimpses of the arena, I couldn’t fully appreciate its majesty.
Crowded Exhibits and Lost Time:
The exhibits were equally packed, leaving little room for a comfortable viewing experience. I felt a pang of disappointment, unable to fully immerse myself in the stories they held.

The Colosseum’s views of the surrounding Roman sites were also obscured by the relentless crowd. It was frustrating to be surrounded by people, unable to fully appreciate the historical context.
A Dream Deferred: A Quiet Moment in the Colosseum
Despite the overwhelming crowds, I still dreamt of experiencing the Colosseum in a more intimate setting. To fully appreciate its grandeur, I envision a quiet moment, walking the arena floor, feeling the history seep into my soul.
A Winter Visit:
My future visit to the Colosseum will be during the winter, when the crowds are smaller, allowing for a more serene and immersive experience. This time, I hope to truly connect with the history and majesty of this iconic landmark.
