San Michele a Ripa, a monumental complex towering over the Tiber River, boasts a rich history steeped in compassion and innovation. This sprawling structure, stretching over 25,000 square meters, took shape over 150 years, beginning in the late 17th century. It stands as a testament to the vision of several popes, each leaving their mark on this grand edifice.
A Haven for the Needy
Pope Innocent XI, known as “the apostle of Roman charity,” initiated the project in 1686. Using his family’s land and resources, he envisioned a sanctuary for abandoned and homeless youth. The four-story building, designed by Carlo Fontana and Mattia de’ Rossi, welcomed these young souls, providing them with a place to call home.
Pope Innocent XII expanded upon this noble endeavor, extending the complex’s reach to elderly individuals in need. The project embraced a holistic approach, offering specialized professional training to the young residents. Workshops, a wool mill, an art school, and a tapestry workshop, known as the Arazzeria Albani, flourished within its walls.
A Multifaceted Center of Compassion
Pope Clement XI continued to build upon this legacy, adding a jail for minors in 1704. The complex further expanded to accommodate hospices for elderly women and men, a courtyard for essential services, and a majestic church. Under the guidance of Nicola Michetti, who succeeded Fontana, the façade facing the Lungotevere was constructed.
Clement XII commissioned the construction of a women’s jail designed by Ferdinando Fuga. The addition of warehouses and customs barracks in 1735 marked the completion of the complex as we know it today. Pius VI made the final additions in 1790, incorporating a wing designated as a conservatory for unmarried women.
The complex boasted two churches: the ancient Santa Maria del Buon Viaggio, frequented by the river port community, and a grand church designed by Carlo Fontana. This second church, with its Greek cross layout, was intended to accommodate the different classes of the assisted – boys, girls, and elderly men and women.
A Shift in Purpose
Following the unification of Italy, the complex faced a period of decline. The papal funding that sustained its welfare activities ceased. With the exception of the prison, which remained active until 1972, San Michele fell into disrepair.
In 1969, the Italian state acquired the property, embarking on a new chapter for the complex. It was designated as a business center for public activities related to cultural and environmental heritage. Today, it houses prestigious institutions like the Central Institute for Catalog and Documentation, the Higher Institute for Conservation and Restoration, and offices of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.
