It’s hard to believe our Italian adventure is over! Six months of planning and anticipation culminated in a trip that will be etched in our memories forever. Every day, I find myself reliving those incredible moments, both in my mind and through my photos. Now, I’m eager to share those experiences with you, and what better way to begin than by taking you on a journey through my airplane attire?
Comfort is Key: Finding the Perfect Plane Outfit
Traveling for 24 hours from Orlando, Florida, to Rome, Italy, demanded one thing above all else: comfort. With a long flight ahead, filled with meals and snoozes, I knew I needed an outfit that would allow me to relax and be at ease. I opted for a dark-colored outfit, specifically black, to help conceal any potential spills or messes.
Eileen Fisher’s classic styles have always been a favorite of mine for their comfort and quality, and I was particularly drawn to the unique cut and design of the Funnel Neck Top. Paired with her Crepe Ankle Pants, it was a match made in travel heaven. For the return flight, I added a plain Jersey Knit Top to my packing list, ensuring I had the perfect outfit for both legs of the journey.
Staying Cozy: A Warm Wrap for Every Situation
When traveling, I’m often caught in a battle between feeling too warm and too cold, making it tricky to choose the right attire. Luckily, my trusty cashmere wrap is my ultimate travel companion. It folds compactly into my carry-on, making it easily accessible whenever needed. And when the plane’s air conditioning gets a bit too chilly, it transforms into a cosy blanket, ensuring a comfortable journey.
Speaking of footwear, I was excited to debut my new white sneakers, but I quickly realized they weren’t as comfortable as my trusty Adidas sneakers that I wear for daily walks. After giving them a good wash, my old favorites made a triumphant return and were my go-to shoes throughout the Italian adventure.
The Importance of Accessories: What I Carried
Of course, a great travel outfit isn’t complete without the right accessories. It’s not just about what I wear on the plane, but also what I carry. When it comes to travel essentials, I rely on a few key pieces that make my journey smoother and more enjoyable.
My two carry-on items:
- A crossbody bag for my travel documents, phone, and other important items that need to be easily accessible.
- My trusty Longchamp Tote has been with me on countless adventures and remains a reliable companion. It carries my cosmetics, medications, noise-canceling headphones, and, of course, my trusty cashmere wrap.
We also pack a hardcover roller carry-on to ensure we have a change of clothes in case our checked bags go astray – something that happened to us on a trip to Alaska. This trusty companion is packed with sleepwear, outfits for the next day, and anything we might need upon arrival. It’s also a godsend when navigating bustling airports.
Rick, my husband, carries the Away Everywhere Bag, with its top handle, crossbody strap, and trolley sleeve, making it perfect for attaching to his roller carry-on. As we rush from gate to gate and through security, he cleverly slips my tote bag over the handle, streamlining our travel flow. Inside the Everywhere Bag, he carries our electronics and personal items.
Packing for Comfort and Convenience
A great roller bag is a travel game-changer, as it provides ample space for a change of clothes and travel attire. This allows for a lighter checked bag on the return trip, leaving plenty of room for those irresistible Italian souvenirs.
And no long-haul flight is complete without compression athletic socks, which are essential for combating deep vein thrombosis and foot swelling. CNN recently published an article highlighting the benefits of wearing compression socks on extended flights.
Planning for a Smooth Journey
We are fortunate that our trip went as seamlessly as possible. However, we are aware of the potential for glitches and delays during travel. That’s why we believe in planning and preparation, including carefully considering our plane outfit and everything we’ll need on the journey.
Arriving in Rome at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, after leaving Florida at 7:00 AM EST on a Monday, left us feeling a bit jet-lagged. But despite the long journey, I slept comfortably in my outfit, and I’m happy to report I’m feeling refreshed and ready to explore all that Italy has to offer.
I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into what I wore on my plane ride to Italy. I’ve included details about my outfit below, so feel free to check them out! And if you’re interested in reading more about our Italian adventures, stay tuned. I’ll be posting another installment in this series next week.
