Rome, the Eternal City, is a place that captures the heart. It’s a city teeming with history, culture, and delicious food, making it a perfect destination for a weekend escape. Last month, I had the pleasure of returning to this enchanting city with my partner, leaving the little ones behind for a much-needed break.

Getting There & Where to Stay

Our journey began at London Gatwick Airport, a short Uber ride from our home. We were determined to make the most of our time, so we opted for a direct flight, arriving in Rome within a mere two hours. From the airport, a fixed-fare taxi (€48) whisked us to our AirBnB, a charming apartment just a stone’s throw away from the Pantheon. The third-floor apartment boasted spacious rooms and a rare elevator in the historic building. Our friendly host, Maurizio, provided a warm welcome, making us feel right at home.

While Rome offers an abundance of hotels for every budget, we always find AirBnB to be the best value for money. It allows you to immerse yourself in authentic Italian living without the exorbitant price tag of luxury hotels.

Must-See Attractions: A Journey Through Time

Rome is a city where history comes alive. From the iconic Colosseum to the Trevi Fountain, every corner whispers stories of a bygone era.

The Colosseum: A Monument to Ancient Grandeur

The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is an architectural marvel. This largest amphitheatre ever built is a testament to Roman engineering prowess. Its sheer size and grandeur inspire awe, transporting you back in time to witness the gladiatorial combats that once took place within its walls.

Trevi Fountain: A Wish Upon a Coin

The Trevi Fountain, one of the most famous fountains in the world, is a breathtaking sight. Surrounded by picturesque cobbled streets, it’s a focal point of the city, drawing tourists from all corners of the globe. Legend has it that tossing a coin into the fountain from the right hand over the left shoulder ensures your return to Rome. While I’m not sure if I’m a believer, I always take my chances, and so far, Rome has welcomed me back year after year.

The Pantheon: A Timeless Masterpiece

The Pantheon, a former Roman temple now a church, is a testament to Roman architectural ingenuity. Its interior, adorned with exquisite marble, is truly awe-inspiring. Even if you decide not to venture inside, the exterior view is a sight to behold.

Vatican City: A Spiritual Oasis

No trip to Rome is complete without a visit to Vatican City, the world’s smallest country. Within its borders, you’ll find St. Peter’s Basilica, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, and the Vatican Museums, home to Michelangelo’s renowned Sistine Chapel.

Piazza Navona & Campo Dei Fiori: The Heart of the City

These lively piazzas are the perfect places to soak up the vibrant energy of Rome. Surrounded by charming cafes and shops, they are ideal for a leisurely stroll, enjoying a delicious gelato, or watching street performers.

The Spanish Steps: An Iconic Landmark

The Spanish Steps, a grand staircase connecting Piazza di Spagna to Piazza Trinità dei Monti, are a popular meeting spot for travelers from all over the world. Even if you just stop for a quick Insta snap, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss.
