Step inside a historical palace that blends classic Italian elegance with modern design, where every detail whispers a story of the past.
Six Senses Rome, the latest addition to the luxury hotel scene, is more than just a place to stay. It’s an experience. Nestled within the Palazzo Salviati Cesi Mellini, a 15th-century gem in the heart of Rome, this hotel invites you to explore the city’s rich history while indulging in contemporary comfort.
A Symphony of Design and Tradition
The Palazzo Salviati Cesi Mellini, once a grand residence, now exudes a warm and inviting ambiance. Patricia Urquiola, the renowned Milan-based designer, has masterfully transformed this architectural treasure into a captivating sanctuary. Circular motifs weave their way throughout, echoing the timeless beauty of Roman architecture while adding a touch of modern flair.
The lobby, bathed in natural light, is a haven of elegant furnishings. Sofas and lounge chairs, a harmonious mix of Urquiola’s signature designs and classic Italian pieces, invite you to relax. Circular rugs anchor these seating areas, each adorned with decorative objects, while potted plants bring a touch of nature to the travertine floors.
Urquiola’s vision is clear: “At every turn, the craftsmanship, the finishes, the materials and the graphics create a union with nature while staying true to both Roman classicism and Palazzo Salviati Cesi Mellini’s rich history.”
A Sanctuary of Serenity and Luxury
Step into the Six Senses Spa, a haven of tranquility. Sheer curtains softly enclose cozy seating areas, offering a moment of peace before venturing into the travertine-lined bathhouse. Immerse yourself in one of the multiple pools, allowing the soothing waters to melt away any lingering stress.
The hotel’s bedrooms exude a serene charm. Soft neutral tones dominate, complemented by tambour panelling, patterned rugs, and spherical light fixtures. The “quirky” layouts add a touch of playful personality.
The rooms themselves are a testament to the hotel’s commitment to preserving history. Cocciopesto, an ancient Roman material made from fragments of earthenware, brick, lime, and sand, adorns the plasterwork. “The legacy of antiquity is also honored with the choice of cocciopesto, which decorates the plaster of the rooms and gives a nod to Roman architect Vitruvius,” the studio explains.
A Culinary Journey and Cityscapes
The hotel’s restaurant, Bivium, offers a trattoria-style dining experience. Enjoy authentic Italian cuisine in the courtyard, where circular counters echo the curved green marble bar in the main lobby.
The Notos rooftop terrace and bar provide the perfect setting for an evening drink. Savor botanical cocktails and light bites while admiring breathtaking city views.
Artful Touches and Recognition
Art plays an integral role in the hotel’s ambiance. Federica Sala, an art advisor, has carefully curated a collection of watercolors, sculptures, textile works, and canvases, each unique to Six Senses Rome.
The hotel has garnered widespread acclaim, earning a coveted spot as a finalist in the hotel and short stay interior category of the Dezeen Awards 2023. Studio Urquiola, the mastermind behind this architectural gem, is also a finalist for interior designer of the year.
A Legacy of Design
