A Snowy Start in the Eternal City

Imagine arriving in Rome, a city steeped in history and charm, only to be greeted by its first snowfall in six years! It was a truly unexpected welcome, leaving me scrambling to adapt to the frigid temperatures. With numb fingers and a heavy suitcase, I navigated the uneven cobblestone streets, a far cry from the leisurely stroll I had anticipated.

The icy grip of winter had me searching for warmth, and I found it in a cozy coat shop where I snagged a massive puffer jacket – a necessary investment to combat the bone-chilling weather. Now fully equipped for the cold, I was ready to explore the city’s hidden treasures.

A Walk Through Time

My favorite way to experience a new city is to simply wander and see what unfolds. Rome, with its vibrant colors and captivating architecture, was an absolute treat. The crisp winter air brought a clarity to the sky, illuminating the city in a stunning array of colors, like a faded photograph come to life.

The city was a symphony of motion, with motorbikes and Vespas zipping through the streets. Drivers here have a unique driving style, to say the least, and I quickly learned that the best way to cross the road was to simply walk with confidence and hope for the best!

Despite the snowfall, the city still held a captivating beauty. The remnants of the snow, clinging to the cobblestones and rooftops, created a picture-perfect scene. It was a stark contrast to the usual sunny Rome, and I couldn’t resist capturing these unique, frosty moments in my camera.

High Places and Magical Views

My travels have taken me to some incredible viewpoints, and Rome was no exception. Climbing what appeared to be an ancient castle, I was rewarded with a breathtaking panorama. From this elevated perch, I witnessed a truly remarkable sight: snow-capped rooftops juxtaposed against the emerald green foliage of palm trees – a scene both unexpected and breathtaking.

A Palette of Sunlight

One of the things that struck me most about Rome was the captivating way light danced through the city. Everything seemed bathed in a warm, golden glow, with vibrant hues of orange, gold, yellow, marigold, and brown. This interplay of color, coupled with the city’s stunning architecture, created a truly magical ambiance.

Lost in Translation

As I wandered through the city, my tongue stumbled, searching for the right words. “Bonjour” slipped out a few times, a remnant of my recent Parisian adventures, before my brain remembered I was now in Italy. My Italian vocabulary was limited to “ciao!”, and my attempts at conversation often ended in a mix of Spanish and French, leaving me feeling like a linguistic jumble.

I’ve never been to a country where I didn’t know the language before. In China, I had a tour group and translators. In Singapore and Iceland, English was widely spoken. Even in France, I had managed to learn enough French to get by. But here in Rome, I was completely lost in translation.

Luckily, many people in Rome speak English, and I’m slowly but surely learning some Italian phrases. “Grazie” has become my new go-to, replacing the Spanish “gracias” that I used to rely on.

A City of Charm and Ease

Exploring Rome has been a joy. It’s a city that is easily navigated on foot, and people are generally kind and welcoming, even if you don’t speak their language. So far, I’ve been asked if I’m German or Russian, but not yet if I’m American. It seems my accent isn’t quite as pronounced as I thought!

There’s so much more to discover in this vibrant city. I’m filled with notes and photos, and I can’t wait to share more of my adventures with you. For now, I hope these glimpses into my Roman journey have inspired you to experience the beauty and wonder of this remarkable city.
