Imagine this: You’re driving through the picturesque Italian countryside, the scent of fresh air filling your lungs as you leave behind the bustling city of Pisa. Your next stop? The vibrant cultural capital of Tuscany, Florence, a place that promises a captivating adventure.

Florence: A City of Artistic Marvels and Unexpected Delights

We chose to stay just outside Florence, in a practical camper stop in Scandicci. A short tram ride whisked us into the heart of the city, where the iconic Duomo awaited. Its grandeur was truly breathtaking, and we found ourselves drawn into the long queue, eager to explore its magnificent interior.

However, the Duomo’s true magic lay in its exterior. Gazing up at the towering dome, we marveled at its architectural brilliance. We tried to venture into the crypt, but the throngs of tourists made it a challenging endeavor. A bit disappointed, we decided to soak up the atmosphere with a refreshing limoncello spritz, enjoying the cathedral’s splendor from a nearby bar.

Florence offered a treasure trove of architectural marvels. We wandered past the Ponte Vecchio, lined with high-end jewelry stores, and admired the grandeur of the Pitti Palace. The Uffizi Gallery, with its endless queues, beckoned us, but we decided to admire it from afar, a reminder that exploring Florence is a journey best savored at a leisurely pace.

Lunch at Il Bargello provided a delightful respite, with a stunning view of the National Museum di Bargello. We indulged in local delicacies – I savored ravioi while Calv enjoyed succulent meatballs – and topped it off with a scoop of delicious gelato.

Monteriggioni: A Medieval Gem in the Tuscan Countryside

Leaving Florence behind, we headed to Monteriggioni, a captivating walled town. This charming, historic town, perched atop a hill, offered a glimpse into medieval Italy. Its narrow, cobblestone streets, teeming with locals, cyclists, and tourists, exuded a vibrant atmosphere.

We spent two blissful nights at a well-equipped camper stop, enjoying the breathtaking views of the Tuscan countryside. The quaint church, with its melodious bells, added a touch of serenity to the experience.

Siena: A City Steeped in History and Intrigue

A short drive away, we reached Siena, a city renowned for its rich history and captivating architecture. The towering Piazza del Campo, the heart of the city, dominated the skyline. We learned that this grand square, once a site of public executions, is also known for its famous Palio horse race.

A labyrinth of narrow streets led us on a winding adventure, where we stumbled upon a hidden gem: the enchanting sound of a piano practice accompanied by a soaring opera soprano, a truly unforgettable moment.

We also ventured to explore a fort, navigating its winding paths and witnessing a fairground truck maneuvering through a narrow archway with mere centimeters to spare.

Orbetello: A Coastal Retreat with Hidden Treasures

Seeking a respite from the bustling city life, we headed to Orbetello, a coastal town located on a narrow spit leading to an island. We spent our days relaxing on the beach, swimming in the pool, and exploring the surrounding areas on bicycle.

Our initial bike ride proved to be a bit of an adventure, as we found ourselves navigating a winding road with fast-moving Italian traffic. After a shorter-than-expected ride, we took a detour to discover the hidden history of Orbetello as a seaplane base. This unexpected discovery made our visit to Orbetello even more memorable.

Conclusion: Embrace the Unexpected

Our whirlwind tour of Tuscany revealed a region brimming with charm, history, and unexpected discoveries. From the artistic grandeur of Florence to the medieval charm of Monteriggioni and Siena, each stop presented a unique experience. Our favorite? The captivating town of Monteriggioni, followed by our cycling adventure to Orbetello, a hidden gem we wouldn’t have discovered without a little exploration.

We’ve learned that the best way to experience the true beauty of Italy is to venture off the beaten path, embracing the unexpected. It’s in those hidden corners, those lesser-known destinations, that we truly discover the soul of this enchanting country.
