Rhinoceros Roma, a relatively new player in the hospitality scene, opened its doors in 2018. The name might ring a bell, as it was founded by Alda Fendi, the youngest of the iconic Fendi family’s five daughters. Alda, a passionate philanthropist, infuses her projects with the Fendi brand’s commitment to creating positive change in the world. This vision is especially evident in Rome, where Fendi has been rooted since its inception in 1925.
Rhinoceros Roma is more than just a hotel; it is a testament to Alda’s artistic vision. It is a collaborative effort with her Fondazione Alda Fendi Esperimenti, an arts association dedicated to fostering creative expression. The hotel itself is a unique blend of accommodation, art, and entertainment. It’s not just a place to stay; it’s an experience. Within its walls, you’ll find 25 luxurious apartments, an art gallery showcasing both emerging and renowned artists, a performance space for cultural events, a sophisticated restaurant, and a rooftop bar with stunning panoramic views.
A Fusion of Past and Present
Housed within a 17th-century palazzo in the charming Velabro neighborhood, Rhinoceros Roma embraces the historical significance of its surroundings. The building’s ancient charm is seamlessly integrated with modern design elements, creating an enchanting blend of old and new. The legendary French architect Jean Nouvel, known for his experimental approach, has meticulously crafted each suite, also known as the “Rooms of Rome.”
Nouvel’s vision was to blur the lines between art, architecture, and history, creating a space where these elements harmoniously coexist. He carefully preserved the building’s original features, while injecting a touch of contemporary flair. This unique approach is evident throughout the hotel. Ornate tilework juxtaposed with high-tech smart systems allows you to control every light with a single touch. Exposed brick meets sleek stainless steel fittings, creating a captivating dialogue between the past and present.
A Luxurious Haven in the Eternal City
We were fortunate to stay in the Master Suite Apartment, which offered breathtaking views of the Temple of Hercules Victor. The generous windows allowed natural light to flood the space, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere. The apartment was a luxurious sanctuary, boasting a spacious living room, a separate dining area that could comfortably seat eight, and a roomy bedroom and bathroom.
The bathroom was a masterpiece of modern design, constructed entirely from stainless steel, creating a futuristic aesthetic. This sleek material extended to the kitchen, hidden behind stainless steel panelling. A simple flick of a switch revealed a fully equipped kitchen with a range of appliances. The countertop popcorn machine was a delightful surprise, adding a touch of fun to our stay.
A Culinary Journey and Panoramic Delights
Le Restau De La Galerie, Rhinoceros Roma’s onsite restaurant, is located on the upper levels. This sophisticated venue offers a menu that celebrates the best of Italian cuisine, drawing inspiration from traditional Roman flavors. You can start your day with a continental breakfast in the comfort of your room, with fresh fruit, yogurt, eggs, and granola replenished daily. Alternatively, you can enjoy a delightful basket of sweet and savory pastries delivered right to your door.
The rooftop bar provides the perfect setting for a pre-dinner drink, offering panoramic views of the city. This was a highlight of our stay. The lively and fun atmosphere was set by a DJ spinning great music, while a glass of Prosecco and delicious snacks made for a truly memorable experience.
A Location in the Heart of History
Rhinoceros Roma sits between the Arch of Janus and the Mouth of Truth, a prime location for exploring the city’s historical treasures. A short walk will lead you to iconic landmarks like the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain. The Trastevere neighborhood, just across the Ponte Sublicio bridge, is a vibrant area filled with charming bars and restaurants. Its cobblestoned streets and narrow alleyways are filled with hidden gems, whether you’re searching for a family-run trattoria for dinner or an outdoor bar for an aperitivo.
An Art Sanctuary
The hotel’s ground level houses the Rhinoceros Gallery, a crucial part of Alda Fendi’s arts foundation. Every six months, the gallery showcases a new exhibition, providing a platform for global talent. In 2018, the gallery hosted a sculpture attributed to Michelangelo Buonarroti, titled “Crouching Boy.” This rare piece was lent to Rhinoceros by The State Hermitage Museum and was the first time it had been displayed in Rome. During our visit, the gallery featured works by French artist Ronan Bouroullec in his first solo exhibition outside of Paris. The hotel’s ability to secure exclusive exhibitions is a testament to its high standing reputation in the art world.
A Unique Touch
Rhinoceros Roma offers its guests a special treat: a compact electric car, aptly named the RhinoRhide. This unique feature allows guests to explore Rome at their own pace and discover hidden corners of the city.
Unforgettable Hospitality
At Rhinoceros Roma, you can expect attentive and personalized service. The friendly team at the front desk is always eager to assist and share recommendations. The hotel offers 24/7 reception and communication via WhatsApp, providing guests with peace of mind and quick responses to any questions. This personalized approach makes the stay truly memorable, leaving guests with a sense of warmth and genuine care.
Our two nights at Rhinoceros Roma were a luxurious and unforgettable experience. The hotel’s unique blend of art, history, and modern design, combined with its exceptional service, created a truly special and memorable stay.
