Rome, a city that evokes images of love, history, and timeless beauty. Many people will instantly think of Rome when they hear the words “Europe” and “romance.” It’s no wonder, as this enchanting city has been a haven for lovebirds for centuries. Just ask Audrey Hepburn how her “Roman Holiday” went! After all, in Spanish, Rome is “Roma,” which, when spelled backward, becomes “amor,” meaning love! It seems as though fate has woven love into the very fabric of this captivating city.

A City Where Time Stands Still

Unlike its French counterpart, Paris, Rome doesn’t boast obvious attractions like the Eiffel Tower. Instead, it seduces you with its intricate tapestry of history and beauty. Its labyrinthine streets, painted with the colors of a thousand yesterdays, whisk you back in time. You might be strolling through the city, enjoying a creamy gelato, when you suddenly find yourself standing before an ancient amphitheater, where gladiators once battled for glory. Or, you might stumble upon a set of seemingly endless steps that lead you to more architectural wonders, each more breathtaking than the last.

Rome is a city where the past and present collide, and the past holds a distinct advantage. Time seems to lose its linear progression here, dissolving the barriers between moments in history and the present. You can easily surrender to the city’s undeniable allure, feeling the pulse of its undying energy as it rushes through the streets. The melodies of Italian lyrics sung by a street performer will sweep you away, leaving you standing among ruins and ancient buildings that will stand for centuries after we are gone.

A City Worth Revisiting

I first visited Rome when I turned 15, celebrating this important milestone with my family. In Argentina, a woman’s 15th birthday is a grand affair, typically celebrated with much pomp and circumstance.

Fifteen years later, when I was 30, the possibility of a second trip to Italy knocked on my door. My insatiable wanderlust, coupled with a lingering desire to explore the remaining gems of Italy and revisit old favorites, convinced me that waiting another 15 years was the perfect choice. This made-up tradition of revisiting Rome every 15 years is one I plan to uphold, so stay tuned for my 45th birthday trip, and my 60th, and so on.

A Change of Plans: From Poland to Italy

Originally, my destination was Poland, as I hold Polish citizenship but had never visited. Feeling a strong pull towards this beautiful country, I knew I had to go, but the nearby war made me hesitant. I shifted my focus to my second option, a road trip across the U.K., which had been on my bucket list for a while. However, fate had other plans.

A close friend of mine, who was living in Brescia for a few months to acquire her Italian citizenship, told me she had some free time to travel. Italy, naturally, became the clear choice.

A Reunion in Rome

Initially, we planned to meet in Brescia after I spent a few days exploring Rome. However, my friend’s citizenship was finalized sooner than expected, and since she had never visited Rome, she decided to join me.

I booked an Airbnb in Trastevere, a neighborhood recommended by my mother, and she checked in before I arrived. When I walked through the door, my friend greeted me with open arms, ending years of separation caused by distance and oceans. We spent three days walking endlessly, sipping countless cups of coffee, and catching up on life’s adventures.

Exploring Italy’s Treasures

After those three days in Rome, we embarked on a journey across Tuscany, South Tyrol, Brescia, and Umbria. However, I couldn’t resist returning to Rome for one final night before catching my flight the next morning. During these travels, I had the opportunity to wander the city aimlessly, discovering its sustainable side, which inspired me to create this eco-friendly travel guide to Rome. Now, when you visit this incredible city, you can explore it responsibly.

Why You Should Visit Rome

Rome beautifully blends the past and present, making it an absolute must-see on any European itinerary. Its rich history and breathtaking architecture transport you to another time, revealing forgotten stories. Culture abounds in Rome, with museums, art galleries, theaters, and historical sites waiting to be discovered.

Even the streets themselves are a captivating attraction, lined with stunning old buildings, bustling with vibrant people, and filled with charming cafes. The air is thick with the irresistible aroma of homemade marinara, inviting you in. Pastel-colored buildings, cascading fountains, grand piazzas, and the scent of freshly baked bread create a sensory symphony that will stay with you long after you leave.

When to Visit Rome

I visited Rome in October, and although I assumed it wouldn’t be crowded, I was wrong. To avoid the largest crowds, the best time to visit is between November and April, excluding the holiday season in December. This may mean packing a coat and warm sweaters, but trust me, it’s worth it. There’s something truly magical about experiencing Rome during the cooler months, perhaps even adorned with Christmas decorations. Imagine the joy of sipping a coffee from a nearby restaurant while admiring the Trevi Fountain, free from the throngs of TikTokers and tour groups!

Rome is a city that will captivate your heart and soul, offering a glimpse into a rich history and a vibrant present. It is a city that will stay with you long after you leave. So, pack your bags, book your flight, and get ready to fall in love with Rome!
